Celite Diatomite

Celite diatomaceous earth grades are made from the fossilised remains of single-celled plants called diatoms. These microscopic algae have the unique capability of extracting silica from water to produce their skeletal structure. When diatoms die, their skeletons settle to form a diatomite deposit.

Celite Diatomite for Filtration

For almost a century, diatomite filtration has been the preferred means of clarifying a variety of products which touch people’s lives every day, including beer, wine, sweeteners, edible oils, lubricants and numerous other products.

Diatomite is processed by milling, calcining and air classification to give a finished, virtually inert filter aid which is predominantly pure silica. When deposited on a filter septum, Celite diatomite forms a rigid but porous filter cake which separates out the particulate matter in liquid as it pass through the filter. Properly processed it has virtually no effect on the odour or taste of any liquid filtered through it.

Celite for Wine

Celite diatomite filter aids are best used for the effective, economical clarification of wine.

Medium Celite grades have the ability to trap fine particles but permit higher flow rates than the fine grades. Coarse grades give good clarity at the highest flow rates possible.

Celite diatomite filtration is a surface collection system which relies on the continuous application of fresh diatomite to a filter screen. This combination of surfaces creates a filter medium that eliminates turbid matters by entrapping them in the total cake thickness, while providing a long filter run. Celite filter aids are also effectively used in multiple industrial applications such as chemical processing, mineral and lubrication oil production and biodiesel purification.

Celite as a Functional Additive

Celite® diatomite mineral additives are available in natural, calcined, and flux-calcined grades. These processes alter the physical properties of the grades to provide specific application advantages. The inherent properties of the diatom, the basic unit that makes Celite mineral additives so beneficial, are carefully preserved during processing.

These properties include an exceptionally high silica content, inertness to most chemical reactions, extremely irregular shapes, and resistance to very high temperatures and pH extremes. Other functional properties of Celite diatomite include high porosity and absorption, unique particle structure and high bulk per unit weight.

Celite for Paint and Coatings Applications

Celite 209 and Celite 266 are natural diatomaceous earth grades that are used in paint and coatings formulations for high matting performance. These grades also provide good hiding, top coat adhesion, durability, burnish resistance and colour uniformity. It also has a low carbon footprint.

These Celite grades also go into water and solvent based paints as well as applications such as masonry paint, traffic paint, primer and low PVC paints.

There are also Celite flux calcined grades for paint and coatings. Celite 281, 388 and 499 are extremely white grades which are used when high colour enhancement is needed in a formulation. It is also used for matting control, for opacity, burnish resistance, breathability, touch-up, density reduction and is easily dispersed within a formulation. Its key applications are for both water and solvent based decorative paints as well as more specialist applications such as traffic markings, masonry paints and primer paints. More info
