IMERYS Filtration is “Ready to Beat Malaria” on World Malaria Day. We have been developing an indoor and outdoor residual spray designed to provide a physical mode of action against mosquito vectors. The World Health Organisation has stated that following an unprecedented amount of success in malaria control, progress has stalled. IMERYS believes that this is due to population growth, urbanization in tropical developing countries and climate change which are driving natural selection towards resistance.
Imergard™ WP is a mechanical insecticide that is non-chemical and non-toxic while being fast acting and persistent. Applied as a wettable powder using standard IRS equipment, it adheres to interior and exterior walls to provide long term residual control of mosquitoes. Contact with a mosquito results in the static transfer of a few particles of Imergard™ WP, which absorb the protective lipid layer necessary for their survival. As a result, the mosquito will dehydrate. This mode of action and means that mosquitoes should not become immune to Imergard™ WP, making it a powerful complementary active to any integrated vector management program.
In Phase II hut testing in Cové, Benin, Imergard™ WP achieved the required 80% threshold mortality on resistant Anopheles gambiae over 6 months of continuous monitoring of resistant Anopheles gambiae. Imergard™ WP, is eligible for World Health Organization PreQualification and pending the completion of the 9 month Phase III field test, is scheduled for commercial launch in early 2019.
